Best Man Speech
Good evening everyone,
For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Steve and I am the Best Man. Good to see Peter finally admitting that.
Genuinely though, thank you both for the honor.
Before we get into it, how stunning does our bride, Shannon, look? Just WOW.
I'd like to extend a huge and heartfelt thank you to each and every one of you for joining us here for such a special occasion. I know how much it means to the happy couple to be surrounded by loved ones.
Life came along with a big pandemic-sized pause button, twice nonetheless. That only makes it especially great to be here now - third time lucky and all.
I've known Peter since the good old days… before his hairline left the building.
Now you would think that your Best Man would be someone who knows you inside and out, right?
Well, for the first two years of our friendship, as far as I was concerned, Peter's name was Stretch. I seriously had no idea he even had a "real" name. Everyone here from Newfoundland is probably completely baffled by this news.
Let’s take a trip to 18 years ago. Peter, Lee, and I were brought together by fate - well, a group project. It became evident pretty early on that we had a lot in common - our love of hockey, golf, and George Street to name a few.
In addition, Peter and I shared another commonality - we both wanted to do well in university. More specifically, we both wanted to do well in university… by putting in the least amount of effort possible. Work smarter, not harder, right?
We devised a foolproof plan for our future assignments. Convince the smartest kids in the class to put in the hard yards and do most of the work.
Well, at least it was foolproof until I was split into a different group for our finance project in our second last year.
Of course, there was a plan B. I would ensure the smart kids in my group would do the work, and then pass a copy of it on to Peter and Lee for "inspiration" for their own report.
Unfortunately, those two got a bit lazy and the only thing they changed was the names on the top. Funnily enough, the professor was on to us immediately and I'll spare you the details but it's safe to say we came very close to being expelled.
Thankfully we (just) survived, and after university, I moved to Calgary. Peter stayed in Newfoundland until the long-distance life got too much for our bromance and he moved to Calgary as well.
I'd like to think he missed me but I think he was drawn in by the stories I shared of my first stampede.
Peter lived with me until he found his own apartment. Eventually, we made it official and moved in together and even opened a joint bank account.
Naturally, the next logical step in the bromance was joint home ownership, so we bought a condo that we lived in for three years or so. We still have it, and rent it out… for a loss each month.
… This is surprising, seeing as Peter is such a property mogul. He went on to make two more condo purchases, meaning he now owns 2.5 horrible investments.
And that's before we even begin to mention all the stock "tips" he passes on to his friends. We have lost money on every single investment he suggests.
Let me tell you, he is and has always been, the most social person I know. As an introvert, I am constantly amazed by the effort he puts into keeping in touch with everyone - never letting distance or life get in the way of a friendship.
Peter is without a doubt the most dependable person I know. You can always rely on him to drop everything for you and make you a priority.
Over the years we’ve travelled together a lot. Mostly to renowned party destinations on classic guys’ trips. Some adventures that come to mind are; Vegas, Phoenix, NYC, Miami, Atlanta, and Montreal.
We were the quintessential "guys guys" back in the day, loving nothing more than sports, parties, and hanging out with the guys. Not that kids were a hot topic back in the day, but when the subject would come up, we would daydream about attending every kind of sporting event with our sons.
Well, here we are, both dads - and not a son between us. Having said that, Peter is the best dad to Vivienne, and it's been really cool to see the traits she has brought out in him that I never knew he had, and I doubt he did either.
His social nature must be challenging for his relationship - because he is literally always on his phone texting somebody about something. Fortunately for him, it does wonders for his career. His work relies on his ability to be a social butterfly, and he works really, really hard…
I mean, it can't be easy spending 3-5 days per week out on the fairway. Although I'd expect the practice to pay off at some point, given that he must be semi-pro by now.
Peter and I golf a lot together in the summer. We are both way too competitive for our own good - especially against one another. And let me tell you, there is no one else on the planet I'd rather take money from than him. Plus, he even pays up some of the time…
And of course, what can I say about Shannon? Not only is she genuinely one of my favorite people, but there is not a shadow of a doubt that she is the one person that was put on Earth just for Peter.
It's so fascinating to have been around for the two versions of my best friend - the one before Shannon, and the one after.
The guy he was before her was an extreme party boy. Every single weekend you would find him out and about in the bar scene. He fancied himself a bit of a ladies' man but had zero interest in settling down.
After spending 33 years single, Peter was incredibly set in his ways and stubborn. He lived life on his own terms and it was going to take just the right person to complement this. Enter Shannon.
It didn't take long for me to cotton on to the fact that these two had a special bond - and that was before I even met her. He and Shannon had been on a few dates but I noticed he had started finding any opportunity to drop her name into the conversation.
Being newly single, I had been looking forward to the two of us living our best single life together again. Knowing his track record, I assumed this thing with Shannon would fizzle out eventually. Spoiler alert, it didn't. Two weekends later, it became clear why he fell for her. I finally got to meet her at Craft, and I remember it as if it were yesterday.
Shannon lit up the room with her down-to-earth good nature and she came across as a really fun person to be around. The first night I met her, I accepted that my single friend was gone because he had found the girl he would marry.
Her easy-going nature allowed him to do his own thing, while she did hers. That's not to say she doesn't stand up for herself and lay down the law when he needs pulling into line. He also knows better than to argue with his new wife.
Peter and Shannon are the best couple to hang around with and they are non-stop entertaining - particularly with their top-tier banter.
I could not be happier that these two people I love like crazy are making it official (finally). I know they are going to have the best adventures as husband and wife.
Now, could you please join me in raising a glass to the newest Mr and Mrs… to a lifetime of love, laughter, and happiness.
Cheers!

Wedding Budgeting: Tips and Tricks
Wedding budgeting can be a daunting task, especially with the average cost of an Aussie wedding reaching upwards of $36,000. However, with a little bit of planning and some smart budgeting tips and tricks, you can have the wedding of your dreams without breaking the bank. Here are some handy tips and tricks courtesy of a Launceston wedding photographer.
Begin by setting a budget
Before you start making any plans, sit down with your partner and determine how much you are willing and able to spend on your wedding. This will give you a starting point for all of your planning decisions.
It can be really overwhelming once you start venturing down the wedding planning path - all the pretty (and overpriced) offerings that you never even knew you wanted - so the second part of this tip is to be strong and stick to your budget.
Prioritise your expenses
Once you have taken control of your wedding budgeting, make a list of all the items you would like to include in your wedding and prioritise them. For example, you may prioritise having an amazing photographer over a fancy wedding cake. It’s all about deciding what aligns with your values as a couple and allocating the funds there.
Shop around
When it comes to wedding budgeting, don't be afraid to get quotes from multiple wedding vendors. It is important to compare prices and find the best deal for the services and products you want. Also, don't be afraid to negotiate and ask for discounts.
Add DIY touches where you can
Doing things yourself or enlisting the help of friends and family can save you money and add a personal touch to your wedding. For example, consider making your own centrepieces, creating your own wedding favours, or having a friend officiate the ceremony. Not only are these budget-friendly options, but you will remember those moments forever.
Be mindful of the timing
Opting for a wedding on a Friday or Sunday, instead of a Saturday, can often result in a cheaper rate. Similarly, having your wedding in the off-season, such as autumn or winter, can also result in a lower cost.
Be selective with your guest list
The more guests you have, the more expensive your wedding will be. Consider having a smaller, intimate wedding with just close friends and family. There should be no guilt attached to the guest list.
It’s your special day, so it’s about who you want to share it with - and couldn’t stand to do it without. Mary from your 8th grade English class will survive sitting this one out, promise.
Get creative with your wedding venue
Renting a hotel ballroom or a traditional wedding venue can be expensive. Instead, consider a less traditional venue like a park, a beach or a historic mansion. This can often be more affordable and offer a unique backdrop for your special day.
If you’re in Tassie, as a Tasmanian elopement photographer, I can recommend some beautiful intimate wedding venues in North West Tasmania for elopement ceremonies that are sure to align with your wedding budgeting goals. Check out our blog, to stay updated with our spotlight series, dedicated to shining a light on some of my favourite North West Tasmania wedding venues.
Wedding budgeting is only the beginning
With a little bit of planning and creativity, you can have the wedding of your dreams without breaking the bank. At the end of the day, remember what is truly important and have a wonderful time celebrating your love with those closest to you.
And, for capturing all of those moments with your nearest and dearest, I would be honoured to be considered as your Tasmanian wedding photographer of choice. I am familiar with a wide range of affordable wedding venues in North West Tasmania and would love to discuss your special day with you. Reach out to me for a chat, and we can get the ball rolling.

Leave the flowers and rom-coms at the door - the way to my heart is food and action/thriller movies. When I’m not focused on running my own business, you’ll probably find me in the gym or the kitchen - tasty treats filled with carbs and/or chocolate are my specialty. (Occasionally I’ve even been known to share). As competitive and driven as I am, relaxing is also my vibe. Watching the sunset with a drink in hand is pure bliss, as is spending time with my family and friends.
After 7 years in nursing, I have literally seen it all, so you just know I bring some unbelievable stories to the table. I don’t want to brag, but I can also get rid of my own spiders. If you're looking for someone with a great sense of humour who can handle anything life throws at them - including creepy crawlies and medical emergencies - then I’d love to hear from you.

Today, we gather to honour and celebrate the life of Anne Marie Johnson, nee Smith, a remarkable woman whose journey began on April 18, 1934, in the heart of Ballarat. Born to Mary Margaret Smith and Arthur Thomas Hughes, Anne was the baby of the family, and the cherished youngest of five children. Her story is one of resilience, love, and a unique spirit that touched everyone who knew her.
Anne’s early life was very much shaped by her siblings – Arthur, Laura, Jean, and Bill. Their bond was built on a foundation of deep affection, and although they had their occasional challenges, they shared a mutual respect and admiration that stood the test of time.
There’s no doubt that her siblings doted on their little sister, guiding her through her formative years with care and compassion. As they were significantly older than Anne, they helped raise her. Their mother, Mary, later married Fred Thompson, and the family moved to a farm on the outskirts of town. It was here that Anne’s youngest sibling, John, was born.
It was Laura, her eldest sister and expert seamstress, who ignited Anne’s lifelong passion for fashion and affinity for style and design that was an important part of her life. Not only did Laura teach Anne how to sew, but she made most of her clothes during childhood and young adulthood, ensuring that her little sister blossomed into an elegant, fashionable young woman.
The hostel in town where Anne lived as a young woman was so much more than just a roof over her head. It gave her independence, confidence, and friendships, and it was during this chapter of her life that she met David Johnson, known as Dave - the man who would become her lifelong companion and husband. Their love story began in their teenage years when he would pick her up on the back of his push bike and culminated in a beautiful wedding when she was 20 years old.
Anne wore a beautiful dress made by Laura when they tied the knot at Wesley Methodist Church in Ballarat on January 29, 1955. Their enduring marriage would thrive for a remarkable 68 years, until Dave’s passing in August of this year. Dave and Anne’s relationship was one based on mutual devotion and unwavering support, and they built a wonderful life together.
Dave and Anne’s marital journey began in Ballarat, living with Dave's parents on Hill Street. Soon, they built their first home in Sebastopol, the first of many homes they would create together, where they lovingly raised their four wonderful children: Joanna, Leona, James, who came along first, and Robert whom they adopted as a teenager.
When Robert was aged 17 and living in a dilapidated, goat-eaten tent, Anne and Dave didn't hesitate to offer him a helping hand. They invited him into their home and in their care, Robert found not just shelter but also support and advocacy, as Anne and Dave assisted him in finding work and stood by him during challenging times. Remarkably, they were so focused on his well-being that it was eight months before they even asked about his surname!
Anne and Dave’s home was always open, a sanctuary not just for their children but for foster children, and anyone else who was down on their luck - even stray animals. One incident perfectly captures the very essence of her loyalty to the many animals she loved in her lifetime.
Once, a neighbouring farmer confronted Anne, quite agitated, claiming that her dog had killed twenty of his chickens. In typical Anne fashion, she leapt to her dog's defence, adamant that her beloved pet could do no wrong.
The farmer insisted she see the evidence for herself. Upon opening her back door, there was her dog, casually perched on the porch, surrounded by the unfortunate evidence. Without missing a beat, Anne pulled out some money and paid the farmer. Her care and protection for her pets mirrored the way she loved and defended her family and friends - with unwavering loyalty and a fierce sense of protection.
Unsurprisingly when it came to a career, Anne went down the fashion path. Her entrepreneurial spirit shone through in her professional life, from her early days at Allan’s to owning her very own clothing store in Gerringong. Her incredible passion for her career was matched only by her dedication to Dave’s plumbing business, where she managed the books.
Her battle with ovarian and breast cancer showcased her incredible strength and resilience, inspiring those around her with her tremendous courage. One thing is for certain, nothing could stop her from looking her best. She was proud of her appearance and would have her hair set weekly, her nails done regularly, and of course, she was a smart dresser.
Despite personal health challenges, Anne and Dave always put family first, whether it was building homes for their children, taking care of their elderly relatives, or cherishing their ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. One iconic story comes from a time at Luna Park when Anne tried to encourage her grandchildren to try out the rides. Long story short, she went down a slide and got stuck and they had to send up the attendants to help get her out!
Anne’s community involvement, from her morning walking group to her volunteer work in children’s medical research, reflected her commitment to making a difference. Her love for life extended to her hobbies, whether it was a cheeky flutter on the pokies, a hit of tennis with Dave, or a round of golf with her buddies Barb Quin, Janet & Carol Miller and Mrs Love.
She and Dave nurtured relationships with lifelong friends like Patty and Alan Brown. They raised families at the same time and although life tried to pull them in different physical locations, they never lost contact and made every effort to see each other regularly. The group shared many unforgettable adventures and memories including dances, picnics, playing tennis, and travelling to the UK, Singapore, Mount Kosciuszko, and Tasmania, to name a few.
As Dave and Anne entered their later years, they purchased a caravan and embarked on travels across various parts of Australia, accompanied by their close friends, Russel and Bub Green. They must have had a wonderful time because, in every single photo capturing their adventures, everyone is always laughing.
And let’s not forget how every Sunday, Dave and Anne looked forward to their weekly catch-up with the Williams family. This tradition involved sharing a cup of tea and a tea bun while catching up on the week's events.
Anne will be particularly missed on Christmas, as it was her favourite holiday. Her love for this time of year was infectious, and she adored the way it brought her loved ones together. Anne and Dave would always host a party with their friends on Christmas Eve, and then Christmas Day was all about family when they would host a huge family lunch. Anne and her cooking will be sorely missed at all future family gatherings, especially her legendary sausage rolls.
Anne's life, like any of ours, was a blend of light and shade. She was a country girl at heart, famous for her high and exacting standards. She was known for her strong temper and forthright nature, traits that sometimes led to challenging moments with loved ones. Yet, the same traits of her character that could sometimes be difficult to navigate, like her fiery spirit, were the same qualities responsible for her protective nature, her resilience, and her unwavering advocacy for those she cared for.
Despite her many complexities, the emptiness left by Anne’s passing is deeply felt. We will miss not only her spirited presence but also the strength and determination that defined her. In missing her, we embrace all facets of her remarkable life, celebrating the enduring influence she has had on each of us in one way or another.
May she rest in peace.

Maid of Honour Speech
Good evening, everyone. For those of you I haven’t met, I'm Lisa, and I have the privilege of being Emily's best woman. Now, you may be wondering why I’m not her Maid of Honour. Well, long story short, if you’ve ever seen the state of her room or car, you’d understand why I don’t want to be any kind of maid to her…
While I reject the maid title, it has certainly been an honour. Witnessing these two gorgeous people being surrounded by so much love is something I’ll never forget, and to have been standing beside my best friend as she exchanged vows with her new husband was nothing short of magical.
Today reminds me of another time I stood by Emily’s side. Let’s rewind back to the 2014 Sharks NRL Grand Final. That might hurt if you’re a Bunnies fan…
Anyway, it was like a movie - Emily falling to her knees in pure joy, tears cascading down her face. I must admit I expected a similar reaction at the end of the aisle today - but I’m absolutely certain that Emily is just as happy today.
Let me tell you, it’s not easy to squash 17 years of friendship into a few minutes, so in preparation for this speech, I was reflecting on who Emily is and came up with three core values. Then, guess what I realised? I would use the exact same three qualities to describe James.
The first is unwavering loyalty
Emily, your loyalty is just one of the many things I admire about you. Not only are you consistently showing up for your loved ones, but your style of loyalty goes way deeper than being the last one dancing with me or providing a shoulder to cry on.
I am completely in awe of the loyalty you show yourself. Not for one moment have you ever morphed into someone else’s expectations, you’ve just been you. I can’t tell you how much I love your authentic self - and clearly, James does too.
Speaking of loyalty, it was tested a little during the engagement process. James had planned to propose on the weekend before the Sharks vs Rabbitohs Semi-Final, which was all well and good - until Emily decided to hold her birthday event on that day.
Quick thinking James sprang into action, teeing up one of Emily’s besties, Rachel, to tell her she couldn’t make it, assuming that would make Emily postpone her celebrations. Spoiler alert: it didn’t, and poor Rachel had to spend the night at home alone…
In the end, the proposal happened on the same night as the big game, which the Sharks won, naturally. Side note: the most loyalty you can show your marriage is to never sit together at footy games. Thank me later.
The second shared quality is determination and hard work
Emily and James are the hardest-working yet humble couple I know. Back in school when we’d have a maths test, Emily would be out having the time of her life while I stayed home studying all weekend. Then, when the results came in, I’d be calling a tutor while Emily scored a breezy 99%.
Now when we catch up, my head is spinning from how busy she is as faculty head while managing to tutor on the side. She’s so humble about it all, but I know she’s absolutely killing it! Then, I ask “So, what’s James up to?” only to find out he’s speaking at epic events in front of hundreds of people or casually just writing a book. Quick question: where did you guys get all of your drive, and can I borrow some? …
Now the obvious one. I think we’d all agree the third quality they share is a brilliant sense of humour
Emily is without a doubt, one of the funniest - and most fun - people I’ve ever met. When we were in school, her house became the party house whenever her parents went away and she is certainly no stranger to a dance floor.
Emily’s gonna hate me for this, but one of our funniest stories comes from a European train, believe it or not. Emily was very hungover and couldn’t help being sick… all over the train. When it started running into everyone’s cabins, they pulled the pin and evacuated the entire train…
Anyway, speaking of funny, when you throw James into the mix, it’s nothing short of a riot - and that’s before we even touch on his affinity for befriending the over-70s crowd at parties. Seriously though, a night with Emily and James together and I am constantly in tears from laughing so hard.
So, there it is Emily and James, I have no doubt that together you will always make each other laugh. You’ll be loyal to each other while still hustling towards your own individual goals and dreams. That sounds like a recipe for success if ever I’ve heard one.
Now, before I wrap this up, could you all please join me in raising a glass to the newlyweds?
A toast to this beautiful love story, and to a lifetime full of love, laughter, and happiness.
Cheers!
Parent/Father of the Bride/Groom Speech
Good evening everyone, and thank you for joining us here to celebrate the love of two of our favourite people - including, of course, our wonderful daughter, Hana.
There is so much to be proud of when it comes to Hana, that I could stand up here all night. Not only is she beautiful inside and out with an enormous heart, but she is strong, creative, confident and independent. You will never catch her shying away from an opportunity to push herself out of her comfort zone, fight for the underdog, or stand up for something she believes in.
She was always the kid working ten times harder than anyone else in school because she had a goal to become a teacher and there was not a thing that could stand in her way. Anyone who tried would have been fighting a losing battle because it had pretty much been set in stone from the age of two.
All of the neighbourhood kids would come to our house after school to play, but all they ended up with was another lesson they didn’t sign up for - this time, led by Hana as the teacher. She would have all of the kids in her bedroom, with her sister, her toys, and her trusty chalkboard. You do have to wonder why they kept turning up for extra school, but I guess she’s always been an amazing teacher. The day she graduated from uni was a huge day for us, and as always, she made us incredibly proud.
One of my favourite Hana memories was when she was about seven years old. We had hired a houseboat on the Hawkesbury and stopped in at the pub for lunch one day. David had gotten us a table, and the girls and I stood in line to order. We’d ordered a hamburger for me, a steak sandwich for David, and a bowl of chips for Maya, but I needed to duck off to the bathroom before Hana had decided what she wanted - so I turned to her, handed her my card and said: “You order whatever you want”.
Fast-forward to our meals turning up at the table. My hamburger, David’s steak sandwich, and Maya’s bowl of chips arrived. Just as Hana was tucking her serviette into her top, her lunch was sat down in front of her - A seafood platter for two!! Naturally, we were completely gob-smacked and erupted into fits of laughter, along with everyone sitting around us. Not understanding what all of the fuss was about, Hana, clearly a very literal person, said “Mum, you said order what you want”.
From that day, we always knew whoever Hana married would need to be able to support her passion for the finer things in life. After all, one of her favourite things to say to me is “Mum, if you want the oysters, get the oysters”. Luckily Jamie brings so much more to the table… like how he’s always around to stick her on a drip when she’s hungover.
Jokes aside, it really didn’t take long for us to realise that Jamie would be Hana’s partner for life. They’ve both made some huge life sacrifices, and they have a special way of just “getting” each other and balancing one another out.
When it comes down to it, all you could ever hope for your beautiful daughter is that she meets a partner who makes her happy and loves her the way that she deserves to be loved - and that’s Jamie to a tee. Not only is he the most caring, loving, easy-going person but he visibly lights up when Hana walks into the room and treats her like a queen.
Jamie, we are all so thankful to have you in our lives. Welcome to the family, officially.
We hope that you have a long and happy life together in marriage. It’s no secret that life isn’t always easy, but it’s so much better when you have a great partner by your side. Never forget that you’re both surrounded by so much love and support from all of your friends and family who adore you so much.
Before I wrap this up, I’d like to offer some advice as you step into your new life as husband and wife. Always make time for each other, and never stop laughing - together, and also at each other.
Now, could everyone please join me in raising a glass to the newest Mr. and Mrs. in town?
Here’s to a lifetime of love, laughter, and happiness.
Cheers!

Kristine Louise Johnson - known to her loved ones as Kristi, was a sweet, down-to-earth young woman who packed her bags and made the move from a small town in Michigan to the big city of Los Angeles, with even bigger dreams— to make a name for herself in Hollywood.
Just like many bright-eyed young people before her, she was hoping to catch her lucky break. Sadly, life had other plans, and things took a turn for the worst in a way no one could have ever imagined. Kristi Johnson’s name would end up making headlines in Hollywood, it was just, tragically, for all of the wrong reasons.
As always, this is going to be a challenging story for me to recount and for you to hear, but we’ll do our best to get through it together because the young woman at the centre of it had such a bright personality and she deserves people everywhere to know who she was.
Saugatuck, Michigan, a picturesque town of just a thousand residents, seems like the ideal place to grow up. Nestled comfortably along the shimmering southern shore of Lake Michigan, it embodies the quintessential small-town lifestyle: serene, secure, and close-knit.
It's the type of place where roots run deep, houses and cars are perpetually unlocked, and evening bike rides are untroubled by safety concerns. At the heart of this community is an unspoken understanding: everyone knows everyone, and people grow close to their neighbours.
The name Kristi Johnson will forever be etched in the memory of Saugatuck's townsfolk. Kristi, a vivacious young woman, known and loved by all, left an indelible mark on this quiet, seasonal resort town.
She was impossible to ignore, standing out even amidst the town's natural beauty. With her big blue eyes, bright blonde hair, and full lips, she was stunning. But it wasn't just her physical attributes that made her shine. It was her infectious laughter, loud and wild, that truly set her apart. When she laughed, so did everyone else around her.
Kristi was undoubtedly beautiful, but it was far from the most alluring thing about her. She was warm and open, with an innate ability to make people feel good about themselves. She loved nothing more than to share her happiness with others.
Graduating from Saugatuck High in 1999, Kristi was one of just 56 students in her class. Her larger-than-life personality filled the hallways, her iconic laughter echoing through the classrooms and corridors.
Despite Saugatuck's many charming characters, there was something undeniably special about Kristi. As the cafe owner fondly remembers, her personality was magnetic, “She had such a presence that we wanted her on our staff. She was always bright, happy, and smiling. When she manned the register, people enjoyed being in my shop because of her."
Amidst the idyllic lifestyle, Kristi Johnson embraced the tight-knit community wholeheartedly. She contributed to the town's rhythm and vitality, and in addition to waitressing at the town’s beloved cafe, Kristi participated in the local theatre club and spent her free time sailing.
When summer painted Saugatuck with its warm hues, the town buzzed with tourists flocking to the picturesque beaches. These were the times Kristi and her friends cherished most, revelling in the vibrancy of their beloved hometown.
As the Michigan summer comes to a close and the area empties, the town’s charm gives way to an isolating quiet. The winters are harsh and long, often lasting three to four months, with temperatures regularly plunging below zero. This frigid season, so different from the warm and vibrant Kristi, was a constant struggle for her.
But the biting cold and desolate streets were not the only sources of Kristi's discomfort. Behind closed doors, her family life was unravelling. The marriage of her parents, Kirk and Terry, once a source of stability, was crumbling.
Their divorce left Kristi grappling with complicated feelings, and although she understood the reasons, the burden weighed heavily on her young shoulders. In the aftermath, her mother, now a single parent, was left to care for Kristi and her brother, Derek.
Growing up in a town like Saugatuck, where even a movie theatre is a luxury, can ignite a yearning for something bigger. It wasn't long before Kristi's growing ambition became apparent to those around her, her restlessness manifesting in her dreams of escaping Saugatuck.
By her teens, Kristi had started to carve out an escape plan. Her interest in entertainment had been apparent from an early age. She delighted in teaching her friends how to apply makeup and was known for her creativity. She aspired to be a big name in Hollywood, and her dream was met with support from those who knew her.
But Kristi didn't limit herself to just acting. She was keen on all aspects of show business, both in front of and behind the camera. Her intelligence, coupled with a natural on-camera presence, suggested she could thrive in many roles within the entertainment industry.
With high school graduation on the horizon, Kristi laid out her future plans. She would leave Saugatuck behind and head to Hollywood, eager to chase her dreams of a career in the movie industry.
As the Saugatuck High School class of 1999 prepared for graduation, Kristi's yearbook quote spoke volumes about her aspirations. The quote by Ralph Vaull Starr read: "Reach high, for stars lie hidden in your soul. Dream deep, for every dream precedes the goal." This encapsulated Kristi's burning desire to chase her dreams and achieve her goals.
After graduation, the time came for Kristi to take the monumental leap. With her bags packed, she readied herself for the biggest move of her life. Her father was understandably worried about his young daughter leaving the familiar comfort of Saugatuck for the sprawling metropolis of Los Angeles - but inevitably, he supported his little girl in following her dreams.
With a cocktail of nerves and anticipation bubbling inside her, Kristi faced the daunting journey ahead. Los Angeles seemed like a world away from the quiet, quaint streets of Saugatuck. But the call of her dreams was stronger than the fear of the unknown, and she was ready to step into this exciting new chapter of her life.
In September 2000, at the age of 19, Kristi left her cherished hometown to chase her Hollywood dreams. She knew it was a gamble, but with a dash of luck, she believed she could make it. Little did she know how swiftly and dramatically fortunes can change.
Leaving behind her tiny hometown and its tight-knit community of barely 1,000 people, Kristi found herself in Los Angeles, a sprawling city teeming with 3.7 million residents. LA, the City of Angels, where stars are born and dreams become reality, was a stark contrast to the quiet tranquillity of Saugatuck.
Like countless young people before her, Kristi came to Hollywood hoping to get her big break. Initially, the vast city felt overwhelming. Saugatuck, a town small enough to walk across in 20 minutes, was worlds away from the traffic-filled streets of LA, where people spent hours commuting every day of their lives.
Fortunately, Kristi was not completely on her own. Her parents, despite their reservations, provided financial support. Her mother helped by gifting her a car and supplementing her rent, easing her transition into this new phase of her life.
In her new city, Kristi began the search for movie job opportunities, but she quickly realised that L.A. wasn't as welcoming as her hometown. She may have been a standout in Saugatuck, but in Hollywood, young dreamers like her were abundant.
It was tough for her in Los Angeles to find work, due to the competitive environment. Kristi was waiting for her big break, but as everyone knows, these don't come easily in the film industry.
Despite the challenges, Kristi was resilient. Her perseverance paid off when she landed her first job as a production assistant on the film, Murder by Numbers which starred the legendary Sandra Bullock. Being part of such a project, seeing movie stars, and experiencing the lively set, convinced Kristi that she was on the right path.
Feeling like she’d found her feet professionally, Kristi's next goal was to develop a social life in her new city, taking one more step towards making Los Angeles her new home. The flashy, upscale club scene of LA initially proved to be overwhelming for Kristi, but it wasn't long before she found friends who made the new environment less intimidating.
Among them was Aaron Garcia, who fondly remembered their first meeting, "This girl walks in and she just lights up the room. Immediately, I knew she wasn’t from L.A. She really liked being out in California. It was a big change from where she was from."
Together, the pair explored a new kind of nightlife, the rave scene: all-night dance parties in industrial settings, accompanied by thunderous music. This was a world entirely new to Kristi, and she was swept up in the exhilaration of it.
Her city-wise friends found Kristi's small-town charm a refreshing change. Despite her striking good looks, which stereotypically may be associated with vanity or a superficial streak, people were pleasantly surprised by her big heart, and how she treated everyone she met with endless kindness and respect.
However, Kristi's naivety sometimes made her vulnerable. The dark underbelly of the rave scene, filled with drug use and dubious individuals, wasn’t without its challenges for the trusting young woman from a small Michigan town.
With her exceptional beauty making her stand out, she was constantly under the male gaze whenever she went out. Learning to navigate this new world, with its complications and potential dangers, proved to be a steep learning curve for Kristi.
One night, amid the pulsating energy of the dance floor, Kristi met Todd Kolabas, a suave ladies' man known for his edge. Todd was immediately taken with Kristi's charm, and she found his rebelliousness a thrilling change from the boys she'd known back in Saugatuck. They began dating and soon decided to move in together, although financial stability remained elusive.
Kristi found herself grappling with professional uncertainty even as her personal life underwent significant changes. Her career seemed stuck in neutral. After her initial foray into the movie industry as a production assistant, finding the next step in her Hollywood journey proved to be challenging.
Still clinging to her dreams, Kristi took on a day job to make ends meet. Like many in the arts, she found herself working outside her field of interest, doing data entry at a cellphone company.
Meanwhile, her personal life was unravelling. The honeymoon phase with Todd had passed and their relationship had turned tumultuous and even at times abusive. Their arguments escalated, leading to some terrifying moments.
Recognizing the danger, Kristi left Todd and moved into a Santa Monica apartment with two new roommates. Although Todd struggled to accept the breakup, Kristi seemed unfazed and continued to forge her own path.
By February 2003, Kristi's two years in LA had not unfolded as she'd hoped. Her day job was unfulfilling, her career was stalled, and her relationship had ended badly. Her dreams were far from being realised.
Despite these setbacks, Kristi remained determined. Her dad tried to convince her to return home, but she was hesitant to abandon her Hollywood dreams. She clung to the belief that her big break was imminent. Kristi knew exactly what she wanted; she just had to figure out how to get there.
When February 17th came, Kristi's mother, Terry Hall, back in Michigan, was taken aback when she realised she hadn’t heard from her daughter in a couple of days. This was unusual for them, as they had kept in close daily contact since Kristi’s move. Concerned, Terry reached out to Kristi's roommate, who also hadn't seen or heard from Kristi for the same amount of time.
Alarmed, Terry contacted the cellphone company where Kristi worked. Despite being a reliable employee known for being punctual and very rarely needing to take time off, they confirm that Kristi hadn't shown up for her shift that day. This sent Terry's worry into overdrive, and she decided she had no choice but to contact the police.
As the unsettling realisation that Kristi has seemingly vanished sunk in, the detective filed an immediate report. Kristi's phone and bank activities had come to a halt, and there was a growing sense that something was seriously amiss. This news quickly circulated among Kristi's friends and family, which ramped up their shared concern.
On the night Kristi was last seen, she had made plans to go to a rave, so questions began emerging about the type of things that could have gone wrong in such a setting. It’s common knowledge that the rave scene is rife with drugs and nefarious characters, so had something happened - did she disappear from the rave?
As they dug deeper into their investigation, another red flag emerged - Kristi’s previous relationship with Todd had turned quite nasty and even violent, and people in her circle knew that he hadn’t taken the breakup well. Police were beginning to have their suspicions about Todd, and he was brought in for questioning.
He claimed to have been dirt-bike riding on Vandenberg Air Force Base with a group of friends, and as it would turn out, his alibi was corroborated by other parties. So, there you have it, Todd is ruled out as a person of interest - at least for the time being…
As investigators looked into Kristi’s computer, they found an invitation from the promoters of Saturday night’s rave that she was planning to attend. They reached out to the organisers only to find that her name was never crossed off the guest list, implying that she didn’t make it to the venue that night. So, what could have happened to Kristi?
It had now been 72 hours since Kristi was seen, and everyone was feeling like there was no obvious way to turn. There were no substantial leads to explore. Police decided to hold a press conference, which set off a media frenzy - headlines like “Beautiful young actress missing in Hollywood” were splashed over publications everywhere, and they're the kind of headlines that sell papers - so Kristi’s image ended up everywhere.
Finally, a promising lead came along when, on the morning of February 20th, police received a call from a woman named Susan Murphy. Susan was put on to the lead detective, and she explained something strange that had happened to her a few weeks prior.
On January 24th, Susan was approached while shopping in Macy’s at the Century City Mall, by a man claiming to be the Director of Photography for the new James Bond movie, who requested she meet him for an audition.
The man tried to lure Susan with a promise of a $100,000 role in the film. The only requirement was for her to appear the next day in a short black miniskirt, white button-down dress shirt, sheer nylons, and black stiletto heels for an "informal screening" with famous actors Pierce Brosnan and Sean Connery.
When the detective heard about this outfit, it sent chills down her spine. I know you’re wondering why, so in order to answer it, let’s jump back in time to February 15th, the last day that Kristi’s mom and roommate heard from her, and it will all become clear.
On the morning of Saturday, February 15th, Kristi had been in an exceptionally good mood. She headed off to the Century City Mall, for some window shopping before the evening came when she would be heading out to a rave.
Kristi arrived at the mall just before 1.00 pm and then her day took an unexpected turn. As she was browsing through stores that caught her eye, a man approached her with an offer that was hard to refuse. He told her he was involved in an upcoming James Bond movie, and invited her to an audition.
Kristi was cautious at first, but he seemed genuine, albeit smooth and polished. After all, she was in Century City, which is the area where all of the producers and agencies are based, so it made sense. She was in a logical location to be discovered.
After they discussed what she should wear, and how much money she could expect if her audition was successful, Kristi agreed to the audition later that afternoon at 5.30 pm. Kristi walked away thinking this could be the big break she’s been waiting for, and what a dream come true it would be to be cast as a Bond girl.
She later told her roommate all about her chance encounter, while she modeled the outfit that had been discussed with the casting director. Though Kristi admitted she was a little apprehensive about the well-dressed, sweet-talking stranger, she didn’t want to pass up the opportunity of a lifetime. Her roommate had never seen Kristi so excited about anything, and it’s likely that the promise of a $100K paycheck contributed to that.
Although they weren’t the type of clothes she would normally wear (you guessed it - a white button-down blouse, short black miniskirt, sheer nylons, and stiletto heels) - she went along with it and seemed to be having fun envisaging herself as the next smalltown success story, even though she could barely walk in the stilettos.
She then packed her outfit in her car, ready for the audition, and headed for the Hollywood Hills - a glamorous area filled with stars and big-time producers. This is the point where Kristi’s hopes and dreams seemed like they could be coming to fruition, and all that was left to do was just find the “Castle House” that had been described to her.
She’d been given a general description of the house but was having trouble finding it. She’s lost and running late, and feeling stressed. She stops and asks a local man for directions to the “Castle House”. He had no idea what she was referring to, but it rang a bell with his wife, who came over to the car to point her in the right direction.
When Kristi’s mom, Terry, spoke to her roommate two days later, on February 17th, she was told that the last time she’d been seen was on February 15th when she was headed to the Hollywood Hills for the audition.
The detective’s search for Kristi began with her last known whereabouts, and the roommate provided the vital information that painted a picture of her demeanour and final movements before going missing. She had:
- Been to the Century City Mall
- Been approached by the man about the James Bond audition
- Purchased the specific attire he had requested she wear to the audition
- Gone home, modelled the outfit for her roommate, and seemed very excited about the opportunity
- Shared her plans to head to the Hollywood Hills for the audition, and then go to a rave in the evening
Once it was established by police that Kristi hadn’t made it to the rave, a burning question emerged - had she made it to the audition?
When they initially pursued this line of inquiry, police tried to track down information related to a Bond film in production, but it didn’t result in any leads. However with thousands of projects undertaken in Hollywood every day - and many kept secret - this wasn’t necessarily a red flag.
Once Susan Murphy had called with her story, however, the entire landscape of the case was changed forever.
On hearing the man’s spiel at the mall, Susan had been a little sceptical, yet curiosity still got the better of her - so she took her boyfriend along to the audition just to be safe. The audition was scheduled for the following day, so Susan stood at the agreed meeting place while her boyfriend remained down the street a little, keeping her in eyesight at all times.
At first, the mystery man was nowhere to be found, but then he turned up out of nowhere and suggested they grab a drink and then head up to the Hollywood Hills for the audition. Being a little on edge about the whole situation, Susan requested his identification before she’d go anywhere with him.
He claimed he couldn’t show it to her because he had left it on set. He then got quite angry at the fact she wasn’t dressed in the outfit he had requested but rather had turned up in tennis shoes. He told her to forget it because she wasn’t right for the part. He claimed he needed someone who would do as they’re told. The next thing she knew, he had turned and walked away, and nothing further ever transpired.
Susan went home, tried to file it away in the back of her mind, and chalk it up to a waste of time and a weird Hollywood story to tell at a dinner party. However, something deep in the pit of her stomach told her this man was evil.
Unsurprisingly the lead detective was building a link between Susan’s story and the story from Kristi’s roommate - which ultimately raises a lot of questions about Kristi’s disappearance. Police were convinced that Susan and Kristi were approached by the same man, but the big question was who is he?
Susan assisted the police in coming up with a composite sketch of the man. Although it was just a drawing, they now had the face of a lead suspect in Kristi’s disappearance. The next day, this sketch was released to the general public and was heavily circulated by media outlets in no time.
Before long, police had received another key phone call, this time from a parole agent who was compelled to call in a tip when she saw the sketch on the news - claiming it looked remarkably similar to her parolee, Victor Paleologus.
Victor Paleologus had been convicted of, and incarcerated for, sexual assault in the past. As it turns out, he had falsely promised the woman he had assaulted, a role in a James Bond film.
In addition to that compelling factor, When the lead detective showed his mugshot to Susan Murphy among a lineup with five other men, she was able to instantly confirm that Victor was the same man who had approached her in the mall.
With the positive identification of a known sex offender who was posing as a casting agent, police put a plan in place to speak to him as soon as possible. Interestingly enough, they found Victor already behind bars at the L.A. County Jail; this time for stealing a BMW.
He denied any knowledge of Kristi Johnson and even presented them with an alibi. He explained that he had spent the evening at home before heading out to IHOP to meet with a friend. When his friend was able to back up this story, the police were worried they had come to a dead end.
Another concerned citizen made a call into the tip line; this time it was the man Kristi had asked for directions in the Hollywood Hills. His name was Douglas Kirkland, and he and his wife were able to confirm that they had spoken to her at 5.30 pm, which was at least 6 hours earlier than Victor’s alibi came into play.
On February 24th, police were notified that a white 1996 Mazda Miata registered to Kristi Johnson had been parked eight days earlier at the St. Regis Hotel in Century City, by a man who strongly resembled the composite sketch.
But where was Kristi? Well, almost three weeks after the 21-year-old had gone missing, on March 3rd, unfortunately, everyone’s worst fears would come true.
Southern California is known for its lack of rainfall, yet in the winter of 2003, it was well and truly deluged. Torrential rains swept forcefully down the melancholy slopes surrounding Hollywood, bringing with it a surge of mud.
When at last the sun managed to pierce the lingering cloud cover, a shocking discovery was made. Hikers in a ravine, who had anticipated a pleasant view, instead found remnants of a female corpse buried in the mud on the side of the hill and alerted emergency services.
She was half-naked, partially wrapped in a sleeping bag, with hands tied behind her back, and both of her legs bound together. She was wearing high heels and was severely decomposed from the shoulders up, due to being outdoors in such a horrendous wet season.
The lead detective in Kristi’s case was called to the scene immediately, where her back tattoo was identified, and it was confirmed to be her body. The police chief notified Kristi’s family that their little girl had been found, just unfortunately not in the way they were hoping for. On hearing the heartbreaking news, her dad made one request to the police, “please just treat her with dignity”.
While police had located no fibres, bodily fluids, or eyewitnesses in relation to Kristi’s remains, what they did have were plenty more stories from other young women who were coming forward with their own experiences of being approached by a casting agent at the Century City Mall, about a Bond movie audition.
Actress Cathy Debuono came forward with her own story. In 1999, Cathy was taking a day off from filming Star Trek Deep Space Nine and found herself confronted with a peculiar situation. After a regular gym session, she was strolling through the Century City Mall in Los Angeles when she was approached by a tall, well-dressed man.
The man had only an inch or two on her, as she was 6 feet tall, and he introduced himself as Brian. He immediately expressed interest in Cathy’s career, asking if she was an actress or a model. Intrigued, she confirmed her status as an actor. Brian then began to unravel an enticing opportunity - a role in the upcoming James Bond film, supposedly commissioned by Disney.
His attention seemed particularly drawn to Cathy's legs, perhaps due to her shorts or her athletic background as a competitive volleyball player. He painted a picture of her becoming a Bond girl with the continued emphasis on her legs.
As they sat on a concrete bench outside the Body Shop, Brian detailed his vision. He instructed Cathy to acquire a very short black skirt, high black pumps, a man's white shirt, and glamorous, eye-catching stockings. He assured her he would provide the necktie for the audition.
Despite Brian’s seemingly professional demeanour, certain things about his proposition raised red flags for Cathy. For instance, the sum of hundreds of thousands of dollars he mentioned as payment seemed out of sync with what a job like that would usually pay.
He also insisted on bypassing Cathy's agent, arguing that involving them would only lead to losing a percentage of her hefty earnings. That reluctance to go through official channels set off alarm bells in her head.
The biggest shock came when Brian invited Cathy to an ongoing photoshoot at a rented house in the Hollywood Hills. When she expressed discomfort with leaving the mall with a stranger, he backed down, offering instead to meet at the house at a later date for an "audition."
Suspicious, Cathy took Brian's worn, battered business card and the directions he provided. Upon returning home, she immediately contacted her father, a former detective in New York, and her agent. The Disney contact named on the business card claimed no knowledge of Brian or any James Bond film, cementing Cathy’s suspicion.
Concerned that Brian might prey on others less savvy, Cathy decided to investigate further. Accompanied by a stuntman friend from Star Trek, she decided to visit the location Brian had directed her to. She did not take the suggested outfit, already well aware that his promises were unfounded.
The address took them on a winding journey up Laurel Canyon, through Lookout Mountain, and onto Skyline Drive in the Hollywood Hills - a route that would, five years later, lead investigators to the body of Kristi Johnson.
Convinced now more than ever that they had their sights set on the right man, Victor Paleologus, who they strongly believe killed Kristi, the police made it their priority to link him to the crime by uncovering further evidence.
When the next key call came through, this time it was a realtor named Paul, who had recognized the composite sketch of Victor in the media. He went on to explain the unsettling experience he had had after being approached by this man.
He had approached Paul, claiming he wanted to buy a house, and so Paul naturally obliged and proceeded to show him through around 10 different houses for sale, all in the Hollywood Hills area.
While detailing his day with Victor, one particular detail stands out to police - whenever he was being shown a new house, he would say “I’m going to scream '', before going into a room and closing the door. When he came out, he would then ask Paul if he could hear anything.
This is alarming, to say the least. One would surmise that he was checking out the houses to find out which one was the most soundproofed to stifle the sound of screaming. Paul definitely thought it was odd behaviour at the time, but after seeing the reports, he knew he had to come forward.
The area where Kristi’s body had been found was several hundred yards away from one of the vacant homes that Victor was shown - 8583 Skyline Drive. Although they were lacking any forensic proof. Police believed they had enough evidence to convince a jury that Victor Paleologus was the person responsible for ending Kristi’s life.
And, in July 2006, the jury listened as prosecutors described the horrific details of what they firmly believe happened to Kristi Johnson. They put forward that after being given directions to the “Castle House” by the couple at 5.30 pm, she was led inside by Victor.
They speculated that she may have been a little confused as to why the house was empty, but noted that he was very charming and it was likely that he would have convinced her that the house was being renovated or similar.
She would have likely begun to get changed into the audition outfit that he had requested she wear, before being attacked from behind. Though she could have been putting up one hell of a fight, unfortunately, just as Victor planned, nobody could hear a thing.
Whether his intention had originally been sexual assault or he had murder on his mind, it’s clear his plan had been to lure a woman into a vulnerable position, where she had no way out. Ultimately what the prosecution presented to the jury was that in an effort to keep her quiet without leaving blood or any sign of mess in the house, he strangled Kristi to death.
In disposing of her body, the jury heard that Victor wrapped it in a sleeping bag that was taken from her car, before throwing her over the side of the ravine. Then, just in time to secure his alibi, he met up with his friend later that evening at IHOP
The prosecution team painted a picture of Victor Paleologus as a sadist, a con man, an imposter, a sexual predator, and someone who wouldn’t hesitate to do whatever it takes to cover his tracks.
On his computer, along with a collection of bondage-themed pornography, police found many images of a young woman posed in various positions, dressed exactly in the way that he had instructed all of the hopeful Bond girls to wear to their audition.
All in all, there had been ten women that came forward about being approached by Victor Paleologus in the same way Kristi had been. At the trial, the prosecution summoned seven of these women to the stand to affirm that Paleologus had enticed them to various sites under the guise of prospective photo sessions or auditions.
Heather Maher had a harrowing encounter with Victor Paleologus, which she recounted as a witness. Maher was 24 years old when Paleologus approached her and her friend, Kimberly Resnick, outside Skybar on August 28, 1998.
Presenting himself as a Disney producer, Paleologus told Maher and Resnick that he needed women to pose for marketing posters for a James Bond movie. He complimented Maher's legs and asked her to meet him at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Marina del Rey two days later.
He explicitly told Resnick that she could not attend because the meeting was on a "closed set." Despite Resnick's cautioning her not to trust him, Maher decided to attend the 9.00 am meeting, dressed as Paleologus had instructed – in a button-down shirt, short black miniskirt, sheer nylons, and black stilettos.
At the hotel, Paleologus manipulated Maher's pose, insisting that her crossed legs stay closed together during the audition. He showed her documentation indicating that she could earn between $80,000 and $100,000 for the role.
Subsequently, Paleologus moved the audition to a property on San Vicente Boulevard in Brentwood, which used to house Café Milano where he had previously worked, to meet a supposed casting director.
When Maher arrived at the new location, she found a room furnished with only three chairs and a light. Paleologus instructed her to pose again, this time on the floor with her legs crossed in front of her.
He proceeded to tie a ligature around her ankles and looped his tie around her wrist, trying to secure her other hand as well. Maher found herself in a dangerous situation as Paleologus tugged at her nylons and started to unfasten his belt.
Fighting back, Maher managed to free her feet and escape from the room. Paleologus was later convicted of the attempted assault and served three and a half years before being paroled on January 20, 2003. Tragically, this was just a month before Kristi Johnson’s disappearance and subsequently, her horrific murder.
In July 2006, in the third week of his trial, Victor Paleologus took a plea deal that took the death penalty off the table and saw him receive a sentence of 25 years to life for what he did to sweet Kristi.
On reflection, we can be thankful that the other women who had the misfortune of meeting him didn’t suffer the same fate, however, at the same time, even one life taken is one too many.
No true crime story is a happy one, but this one feels particularly devastating. Kristi, by all accounts, was a beautiful, vibrant, kindhearted young woman with her whole life ahead of her. She genuinely comes across as someone that you’d just want to be friends with, and it’s so sad that she was taken so young in such a cruel way.
It’s so unbelievably heartbreaking that Kristi Johnson’s short life was abruptly brought to an end in the Hollywood Hills; the same area she aspired to occupy one day.
In Saugatuck, her hometown where everyone is a familiar face, Kristi Johnson was an unforgettable one. Her radiant personality continues to resonate in the hearts and minds of those who were fortunate enough to know her.
May Kristi rest in peace, and let’s all send some positive thoughts out to her family and friends.
Thank you for coming along on this journey with me, and if this brought up anything for you, make sure you practise some self-care and do something nice for yourself.

Have you heard about Australia's Mushroom Killer? Even if you think you know about this one, today’s update is seriously wild, so stay tuned.
A couple of weeks ago, Erin Patterson, since dubbed the Mushroom Chef by the media (and the Mushroom Killer by everyone else) invited her estranged husband, Simon, his parents, and his aunt and uncle to lunch at her home in Victoria, Australia.
The apparent reason for this get-together was due to Erin’s desire to reconcile with Simon, and her wanting the whole family’s tick of approval. Simon, who she shares two children with, couldn’t make it at the last minute but the lunch went ahead and 48-year-old Erin allegedly served beef wellington to her four guests.
I bet that’s one meal Simon’s glad he skipped because the next day, three of the guests (including both his parents) were dead and the fourth remains in a serious condition. The cause of their illness was quickly identified as death cap mushroom poisoning.
Erin has publicly declared her innocence but her version of events keeps changing. She also suspiciously disposed of her food dehydrator soon after the meal and called one of her apparent victims by the wrong name when she fronted the media…
Things got even spicier when it came to light that Simon spent time in hospital last year and nearly died - twice - from a “mystery gut illness”.
Today, a contractor who worked at Erin’s previous house has come forward with some insane photos of what looks like children’s drawings on the dining room walls. The disturbing graffiti is littered with tombstones and phrases like “I am dead”, “You are dead”, and “Grandma R.I.P”,
This really is the story that keeps on giving and I really hope the fourth victim pulls through.
True Crime Script
Are you ready to hear one of the wildest true crime tales that also happens to be pretty recent? Well, my friends, fasten your seatbelts, 'cause this one is a ride and a half.
I'm sure you're going to have a lot of thoughts and feelings about this case, so be sure to stick around and leave a comment below once you hear all of the facts.
Now there is quite a lot of information to get through, so let's jump right on into the case of Bart and Krista Halderson.
We begin our tale in the middle of summer, 2021. The events that follow transpired in Windsor - a village situated within Dane County in Wisconsin, which is home to a little under 9000 residents.
Two of the residents that lived in Windsor were Bart and Krista Halderson along with their youngest son, Chandler who was 23. Their other son Mitchell, who was around 25, lived with his fiance.
Life for the Halderson family was said to be pretty typical.
Bart was a very work-oriented accountant, who had recently celebrated his 50th birthday. His dedication to his work meant he was absent from the home more than he would have liked, however, he was said to be a fantastic father who loved his family very much and really encouraged his kids to be the best they could be.
Krista, who was 53 at this time, is described as one of the most family-focused people you could ever meet. She adored her two boys and was affectionately referred to as a bit of a "helicopter Mom" who always wanted to be around her sons - she was forever calling, texting, and checking in with them. She would use any excuse to have a chat with them and find out what was going on in their world.
Her dedication to Mitchell and Chandler was probably enhanced by the fact she had been a stay-at-home Mom until they reached adulthood. It was at this time that she went back to work, and was currently a receptionist at a car dealership.
The dynamic between the brothers, by all accounts, was fairly standard sibling stuff. They got along pretty well as they were growing up, playing video games together and bonding over their mutual interest in technology.
Anyway, Mitchell had his life together and was finding his way in the world as an independent adult. He was doing well for his age, working in the tech industry, planning a wedding with his fiance, and living out of the family home.
Chandler was setting himself up for success as well - and he kept a busy schedule. He was attending Madison College, working for American Family Insurance, and even picked up some work with some police dive units. He had his eye on a role at Elon Musk's company, SpaceX in Florida, which he was excited to be in the running for.
He had it pretty good at home. His parents did everything for him. He didn't need to worry about cooking or laundry, it was all taken care of. Due to the way Krista adored her sons, all she wanted was for them to be happy. If that meant waiting on Chandler, then she would do it.
So, now that we’ve established the family dynamic, which was pretty standard, let's get into the timeline of this case now. Here we are on July 2nd, 2021.
Chandler says his parents left home at approximately 6.15 am when they were picked up by a couple who were completely unknown to him - he didn't know their names and didn't recall seeing them before.
Bart and Krista had been headed up to the Halderson family cabin. Nestled in Langlade County, Wisconsin, the log cabin had been built by the boys' grandfather.
The Haldersons loved it up there, and they would escape to the cabin at every opportunity. Particularly in the summertime when Bart and Krista would try to make it up there at least three times during the season.
Many great memories were made at the cabin, and the couple would either go alone, or with their boys, or occasionally they would invite some friends along for a relaxing weekend.
Anyway, back to July 2nd - so Bart and Krista had headed off to the cabin, and because they had been picked up by the other couple, their cars were left behind in the garage.
Chandler says they were in good spirits before their trip. They were getting everything together for their trip, packing and such. Given that they were heading into the 4th of July, they were excited for a weekend to kick back and have a few drinks. They had apparently taken a fair amount of alcohol and plenty of cash.
So the weird thing here is that on July 2nd, Krista was actually scheduled to work and of course, due to the road trip, she hadn't shown up for her shift. Her co-workers were a little worried when she didn't make it to work because by all accounts, she was such a reliable person and this sort of thing was out of character. They tried calling, but they couldn't get a hold of her.
Of course, even if you're the most responsible person in the world, everyone is capable of making an error every now and then. I mean, who has never misread their schedule or written their shifts down incorrectly at least once in their life?
For the next few days, it was really just business as usual back in Windsor. Chandler was spending most of his time hanging with his girlfriend, Cat, at her mom's house, and nothing out of the ordinary was going on.
Now, one person who couldn't look past the fact that Krista hadn't turned up to work was a new person I'll introduce into the mix. Jane Hilgendorf was a very close friend to Krista. They had known each other since middle school, and I'm not even exaggerating when I say that these two women spoke to each other literally every single day of their lives.
So, added to the fact that Krista had done something totally out of character and abandoned a shift at work without explanation, 2-3 days had passed since Jane had heard from Krista. Jane had been trying to get a hold of Krista and Bart, but all calls went straight through to their voicemail.
It’s safe to say that at this point, the alarm bells had begun ringing in Jane’s ears. She felt it was a good idea to check in with Chandler. He was pretty calm at this point and pretty much just reassured her, "You know what, they're away at the cabin having a good time. I'm sure she will touch base soon". He really just wasn't too stressed about it at this time.
Chandler had had a brief text exchange with his mom on July 4th where she was essentially just touching base. So, I guess he felt comforted by the fact that even though it had been July 2nd when his parents had left the family home, it had only really been a couple of days without contact.
In that conversation on July 4th, Chandler had written to his mom, "Hoping this goes through. I bet there's a lot of people up there making it hard to message".
In response, Krista had written back to Chandler, informing him that they made it safely to the cabin and that they were planning on attending a parade later that day.
On July 7th though, the mood began to shift for Chandler. Bart - and even more so, Krista - were prone to checking in a lot and were really big on communication with their loved ones. It seemed like at this point, Jane’s concern had perhaps rubbed off on him. Chandler disclosed to Cat and her mom that he was getting worried that he had not heard from his parents in a few days. He explained that he hadn't really been able to get a hold of them, and although he had found it a little odd, he had shaken it off until now.
At this point, Cat and her mom just kind of told him that it'd be okay and that he will hear from them soon. And at the same time that this was going on, Jane was getting increasingly panicked, and by the 7th, she reached out to Mitchell to see if he'd heard anything from his parents.
Mitchell was surprised to receive this call from Jane, as until then, he didn't even realise his parents had gone to the cabin. He thought it was strange - not them going - but certainly, them going without his mom letting him know their movements. As I touched on earlier, Krista *loved* her boys so much that she would find any tiny excuse to reach out and have a chat with them, so failing to mention a trip out of town definitely left Mitchell a bit puzzled, to say the least.
Not too long after the phone call from Jane, Mitchell received a text from Chandler, which basically said that he was getting pretty worried about their parents.
Mitchell was trying to piece it all together and make sense of this scenario. He felt the best course of action to get some peace of mind was to try his best to identify the mystery couple. As his family was close-knit, he thought there was no way he wouldn’t know these people, so he started brainstorming.
He came up with three possibilities of who this couple may be. The first candidates were Jane and her husband, which, for obvious reasons, he discounted immediately.
In regards to the other two couples, Mitchell managed to track them down, and unfortunately, they weren't able to provide him with any answers and they had not been involved in any plans for a trip to the cabin.
Although part of Mitchell’s brain was telling him that there was probably a simple explanation like lack of cellular service or an issue with their phone or something, I guess it didn't stop that nagging feeling in the pit of his stomach. They say to always go with your gut, but I think we also have a human instinct to pull ourselves back and say “But what if I’m overreacting? I don’t want to look silly”.
Krista's friend, Jane, still wasn't able to shake her concern, and she really wanted to get some answers. In order to put her mind at ease, she decided to drive up to the cabin with her husband, Michael. Jane and Michael felt it was worth the 88-mile trip from where they were currently staying in a cottage, to check on Bart and Krista and alleviate any worry.
If it turned out they were being dramatic and in fact, everything was fine, then great, but they couldn't sit on their hands and do nothing. Jane in particular just really wanted that peace of mind of knowing that her friends were safe and sound.
Sadly, what the couple found when they made it to the cabin did the exact opposite of putting their minds at ease.
When Jane and her husband, Michael, arrived at the Halderson family's log cabin, they were faced with an unnerving sight.
Not only were Bart and Krista nowhere to be seen, but it was clear that nobody had visited the cabin in some time. The yard and house were quite unkempt which would certainly be unusual for the couple had they been on-site for a few days. In addition, it was clear from the unruly grass outside, that there had not been a vehicle parked nearby recently, because none of it had been flattened.
Jane placed a call to Chandler, where she described the situation and explained that his parents were not there and that it didn't look like they'd made it to their destination.
In response to their absence at the cabin, it was on this day, July 7th, that Chandler filed a missing person report for his parents, Bart and Krista Halderson. Shortly after this, Mitchell couldn't distract himself from the situation, and, feeling like he had to do something, he too drove up to the family cabin to check things out first-hand.
Upon reaching the property, he walked around the entire yard to see if anything stuck out to him. He was then greeted by detectives, who accompanied him on a second trip around the property. After checking out the interior of the cabin, Mitchell was able to confirm with the detectives that absolutely nothing was out of place indoors or outdoors. It was at this point that it was accepted that the Haldersons had never made it to the cabin. Now, everyone just wanted to know why - and where they are, of course.
So what do you think at this point? Do you have a theory of what may have happened to the Haldersons? Let’s keep going, to see if you’re correct.
Moving forward to July 8th, the next day. The missing persons' report had been lodged the day before, and seemingly not really knowing what to do with himself, Chandler began approaching news outlets, appealing for any clues, or anything at all, big or small, that could lead to answers about his parents’ whereabouts.
Now, while Chandler was out and about trying to get answers via the media and the general public, police were, of course, conducting a thorough investigation into the disappearance of his parents.
The biggest breakthrough in the case soon followed. when they received word of the discovery of partial human remains in the woods at a property in Cottage Grove - which is about twenty minutes from the Haldersons' family home in Windsor.
Sadly, these remains were identified as the torso of Bart Halderson. I promised you that this was one hell of a story, and I meant it - because you're not going to believe who owned the property where the discovery was made.
Now, I don't know if you're ready for this, but we must get on with it, so I'll tell you.
Bart Halderson’s partial remains were found on the property of… Cat's mother, Dulce’s partner. Wild, right?
So in summary, Chandler's dad's torso was located at someone named Cresent’s house, who was in a relationship with his girlfriend’s mom. Now, it is a little bit unclear whether Cat lived at this house, but it is reported that she and Chandler spent a lot of time here together.
I'm sure your brain is ticking and you're trying to piece things together, so what I'm going to do is I'm going to go back through the timeline so far and fill in some gaps that I originally omitted, to keep the mystery alive.
Now, this is just a weird little factoid for you all. Just prior to the unfortunate events, Mitchell spent some time in the hospital.
Do you want to hear about the mind-blowingly bizarre gift that Mitchell received from Chandler while he was hospitalised? Well, of course, you do.
While some people choose to send flowers, cards, or stuffed animals when a loved one is unwell, Chandler's gift for his brother was… a bullet from a gun with the words "get well soon" written on it. Really unclear about the logic behind that one but I guess everyone is different.
Remember when Jane rang Chandler from the cabin after finding no sign of Bart and Krista? Well, Chandler's response was quite off-putting. He immediately quizzed Jane - very specifically - as to whether she had seen any blood or shell casings throughout the cabin.
And, do you recall how I told you that Chandler spent July 8th appealing for answers? Well, he was a busy boy that day. That morning, he visited a neighbour across the street to request the footage from their ring doorbell, under the guise of just wanting to try and get a look at the car his parents left in. That wouldn't be too much of a red flag on its own, but he did make it very clear that the footage should come straight to him and bypass the police.
Later that day, Jane's twin daughters, Hailey and Hanna went over to the Halderson home to see how he was holding up. Despite them having a positive relationship with Chandler and usually finding him to be warmer than his sibling, on this day they just knew that something wasn't quite right.
He had a strange demeanour about him and he was cold and standoffish - right from the way he gave them an awkward "side hug" at the front door that was uncharacteristic. Eerily enough, one of them described it as a moment when you just knew you were standing in the middle of a crime scene, and she was really eager to leave as soon as possible.
In addition, as if that isn't creepy enough for you, they could see lots of furniture and decor items that appeared to be really out of place. For instance, the kitchen table was turned on its side and all of the furniture in the basement had been covered.
Out of the blue, Chandler also made a point of telling the girls to never ever hand their phones over to the police. He seemed more concerned with the fact that the police had confiscated his cell phone, than with the fact that his parents were registered as missing people.
So, now you're all caught up and have had your daily dose of "things aren't always what they seem", let's continue. Where were we? Ah, yes the property.
Now from what I understand, Crescent’s property was quite large and contained prominent wooded areas. It was the type of land where you would have little dune buggies on hand, ready to travel to and from the pool and things like that.
Chandler was very familiar with this property because he would always be there hanging out with Cat. However, on the 5th of July, he visited the property when Cat wasn't around, which stood out as quite odd to her mom, Dulce.
She said he turned up solo and asked if he could hang out in the pool. Although it was a bit odd, she had no real reason not to oblige. The plot thickens though because Chandler didn't actually go anywhere near the pool at first. Instead, he headed off into the woods for over an hour.
Eventually, he did return to the pool area - but it was only very briefly, and he soon disappeared for a second time. It is also reported that at one time, she saw him with his parents’ family car, a Subaru, backed up to the garden shed.
Although it had struck her as odd behaviour, she couldn't really see what he was up to, and he did eventually head back to the pool area and got in. But - she said it looked like he was making an effort to put the water on himself as if he was washing something off his body.
Of course, as we now know, remains that belonged to Chandler's father, Bart, were found in these very woods, just three days later.
The question you're probably asking yourself is, what inspired the police to search the woods of the Cottage Grove property in the first place? Well, you see, it was all down to cell phone pings.
They tracked Chandler's activity, which placed him there on July 5th as we already know. If you're not familiar with the Snapchat app, there's a map feature that when activated, and used in tandem with location services being switched on, will highlight your rather precise location.
And not only were police able to see that Chandler was at the Cottage Grove property on July 5th, but thanks to a humble social media app, they had access to a very precise location within the wooded area.
Given the length of time spent in those woods, which was around 60 - 90 minutes, the alarm bells began ringing for the police, which led them to recover Bart's partial remains on July 8th.
That same night, police picked up the now very suspicious Chandler and took him to the station for questioning. At this point, they had already conducted a thorough search of his computer.
Reviewing his Google searches proved very interesting. Would you like to know what he searched for? I know you do. Stay tuned.
Between July 1st and July 6th, there were no Google searches made on Chandler Halderson's laptop. However, by the 8th of July, he was pretty persistent in searching for one particular subject.
The queries that raised some eyebrows were:
- Wisconsin dismembered body found dead
- Dead body found in Wisconsin
- Body found in Wisconsin
- Body found Wisconsin
- Krista Halderson
- Bart Halderson
Being pretty confident they had their targets set on the perpetrator, they were careful with their next move. They needed something to keep him in custody, so after 90 minutes of questioning, Chandler Halderson was arrested for the crime of providing false information in a missing persons case.
Whilst it was evident that Bart Halderson was deceased, there was no indication of the whereabouts of Krista, so she was still registered as a missing person. Of course, everyone wanted to try and be a little optimistic and was hoping that she may still be out there alive.
On 11th July, police were granted a warrant, providing them with the power to execute a thorough search of the Halderson family home. It was here, wrapped inside tin foil, stuffed inside a shoe, in the family garage, that they made a key discovery.
They had stumbled upon the cell phones that belonged to Bart and Krista. Krista's phone in particular was very telling. Here's what it revealed.
On July 1st, which was the day before Chandler's version of events had them setting off for their cabin adventure with a mystery couple, Krista returned home from work at 5.12 pm. Later that night, or more specifically, in the very early hours of the next day, July 2nd, Krista's phone was then switched off for approximately 2-3 days until it was started up again at 11.02 am on July 4th.
The phone was activated for just seven minutes. During this time, and in fact, immediately after being turned back on, Krista's phone had received a text message from Chandler. Two minutes later, at 11.04 am, the reply text had been sent from Krista's cell phone. But by 11.09 am, her phone was switched off again.
Assessing the text messages between Chandler and his mom, Krista's phone on July 4th, it became evident to police that the entire exchange had been made from within the Halderson house. So, this information would point to Chandler having orchestrated that conversation in order to falsify his parents' safety.
On July 12th, Chandler's rap sheet began growing. In addition to the charge for providing false information, he now had three new charges under his belt:
- First-degree intentional homicide
- Hiding a corpse
- Mutilating a corpse
Fast forward two more days, to July 14th, when police received a very interesting lead. A sighting of a man who bore a striking resemblance to Chandler Halderson had been reported, which indicated he may have been in Roxbury on July 3rd.
The witness explained that it had stood out to her because of the odd behaviour. She had seen the man walking away from his vehicle on Highway 60, headed for Highway 188. She then saw him stop before he reached the highway, turn around, and head back towards his car.
The police made certain to pursue that tip, which led them to obtain a photograph of Chandler in that area, which resulted in a search, and unfortunately, yet another grim discovery.
Along the Wisconsin River, on the outskirts of the town of Roxbury, partial remains were located, which were identified as Krista Halderson's legs.
Whilst Krista’s cause of death remained unknown, from the autopsy of Bart Halderson, it was ascertained that his death was a result of gunshot wounds to his back. In fact, the gun that had been used to shoot Bart was an SKS rifle that had been gifted to Chandler about a month prior to the incident. The gun had belonged to a friend he had met playing video games, and it was eventually recovered from the Cottage Grove property.
Although, as mentioned, no official cause of death has been reported for Krista, it is understood, however, that both of their bodies had been dismembered after their murder, with a hacksaw, an alloy saw, and a pair of scissors.
These tools were also found at the property in Cottage Grove. Although it seems a little bold, in summary, Chandler had used this property which was very much connected to him, to dump not only his father's partial remains but all of those weapons.
If you're not already disturbed enough by this case, I have a really alarming forensic discovery to share.
Man, this really is the case that keeps on giving. I promised another grim discovery, and here you go…
Forensic investigators located bone fragments in THE FAMILY VACUUM CLEANER. I'm sorry but that's next level. Over 200 bone fragments originating from human skulls, and tooth fragments were also found in the fireplace.
The most logical conclusion for the police was that prior to literally vacuuming up his parents' remains, Chandler had tried to burn their dismembered heads in the fireplace - which is unimaginable when you think about it.
The fireplace probably would have been the centre of the living room they gathered around as a family, a sort of heart of their home, and then for this to occur - doesn't it just give you the chills?
On August 25th, Chandler Halderson was handed an additional four charges. This brought the total to eight, and including the previous charges, they were:
- Two counts of first-degree intentional homicide
- Two counts of mutilating a corpse
- Two counts of hiding a corpse
- Two counts of providing false information on a missing persons investigation
At this point, there's probably one resounding question doing laps in your brain - ✨ WHY?✨ Well, here goes nothing…
Now, there is absolutely never a sufficient reason to murder anyone - let alone your parents - let alone two people who are by all accounts, just the most loving and supportive caregivers who would have done anything in the world for you and your brother.
Having said that, of course, we, as true crime fans, want to try and somewhat unravel every case and I guess human instinct is to seek answers, wrap everything up in a neat little bow, and file it away.
So, let's unpack the reasons why Chandler Halderson may have been motivated to brutally attack, murder, and dismember his wonderful parents.
Although on paper, Chandler had it all. In addition to a picture-perfect family with a great brother and adoring parents, he had a positive relationship with his girlfriend and was making exciting moves for his future.
As touched on earlier, he was treated really well at home and didn't need to lift a finger around the house. He was living in a nice place, rent-free, with his other expenses taken care of including his car.
Here's the thing though - Chandler was living a double life… Yep, that's right folks.
As we know, things were really coming together for Mitchell, and he was heading into a future he was really excited about.
Chandler, on the other hand, at only 18 months or so younger than his brother, was nowhere near being on the same page. He was far from the independent adult that Mitchell was.
Although he would spout tales of his studies, work, and career plans to his parents, every bit of it was wrapped up in a huge lie. There was no college, no insurance job, no working with the police dive crew, and absolutely no SpaceX opportunity in Florida.
The cold, harsh truth was that Chandler was still living at home, didn't have a job, and spent all day every day playing video games and hanging out with his girlfriend.
His girlfriend, Cat, was also none-the-wiser and believed all the same lies he had spun to everyone else in his life. He even spun the tale to her that he couldn't accept the position at SpaceX anymore, because he had failed medical clearance due to a concussion he sustained after falling down the stairs.
It seems that just prior to this case unfolding, Bart and Krista were beginning to get frustrated with Chandler. It sounds like they had caught on to the fact that everything he told them was fabricated.
That must have been pretty heartbreaking - not that he wasn't successful, so much as the fact that they'd tried to raise good, honest men and unfortunately Chandler didn't fit the bill. As an added layer, for a family who worked hard, his lack of motivation and direction probably would have been quite concerning.
Anyway, it sounds like Bart and Krista were catching on to Chandler's deceptive ways because things just weren't adding up. Despite apparently having a good job, he had no money and no means to move out of home, but nothing to show for having spent any money either.
So, they began tracking his movements and it soon became pretty clear that they had been played by their son. Bart in particular was getting pretty fed up with all of the dishonesty, so he requested proof from Chandler. He demanded transcripts as evidence that his son was attending Madison College as he claimed. Now, you've probably realised that this part is gonna be a bit of a roadblock for Chandler because as I mentioned earlier, he was not enrolled at the college.
That didn't stop Chandler from making an effort to pull the wool over his dad's eyes though. He established several new email accounts, posing as Madison College employees, and had fake conversations with himself in the inboxes, before copying Bart into the email chain to "prove" himself. That may have got him over the line, but it seems he got a little too big for his boots. So what was his unravelling, you might ask?
So, Chandler has done his best to prove to his dad Bart that he's a student at the college with a fraudulent email exchange. However, his great undoing was probably his boldness in his next play.
He offered up a phone number to Bart, as one of the "faculty members", and then proceeded to speak to Bart on a burner phone and conduct a telephone meeting about himself. By all accounts, he didn't make much of an effort to disguise his voice because this made Bart suspicious enough to make his own call - directly to the listed reception number for Madison College.
Bart posed as Chandler and made a general inquiry about something to do with his classes, only to be met with an answer that he probably knew already in his gut. This is how Bart was faced with everything he needed to acknowledge that his son was weaving a web of lies wherever he went.
Now, Bart's response to this was essentially "Well, if you're not enrolled already, you will be now", and he set up a meeting for himself and Chandler to attend the college on July 1st at 1.00 pm.
As this is the day that Chandler is accused of murdering Bart and Krista, it would appear that this meeting and the tension around it was the catalyst for these horrific murders. About an hour before Bart is thought to have been killed, he had sent a text message to Chandler to say "I'm ready whenever you are" - presumably about heading to the meeting.
On September 1st, 2021, Chandler Halderson appeared in court where he was arraigned on the eight charges. He entered a non-guilty plea, and a trial was scheduled to commence in mid-January. 2022.
The trial ran for nine days, and after a jury deliberation that lasted two hours, Chandler Halderson was declared guilty on all charges, in relation to the brutal murder and dismemberment of his loving parents, Bart and Krista.
On March 17th, 2022, the court gathered for Chandler's sentencing. Several victim impact statements were tendered. One of which was from his grandmother who, rather fascinatingly, was seeking mercy for him. Her letter explained:
“I love him even though what he did was horrific". She then went on to say that she didn't feel like Bart and Krista would want their son to be incarcerated for life.
Mitchell's fiancé addressed Judge Hyland, explaining that she felt robbed of her future mother and father-in-law and missed them every day. In addition, she described how she and Mitchell feared for their safety and that of remaining family members, should Chandler ever be permitted into society.
In her victim impact statement, Jane spoke of her best friend of 38 years. She described the lightness that surrounded Krista and how she always made people feel happier, and how her true purpose in life was being a mom.
After explaining that he couldn't find it within himself to be as forgiving as Chandler's grandmother had been in her letter, the judge announced:
"I have to, for this sentence, ensure that the only time Mr Halderson comes back into the community is to have the privilege of a burial that he denied his parents,”
Chandler Halderson was sentenced to life behind bars without the possibility of parole. In handing down his third ever life sentence of his career, something he certainly didn't take lightly, Judge Hyland fought back his own emotions whilst looking Chandler in the eye and calling him "the definition of evil".
Chandler spoke at his sentencing, maintaining a stoic, remorseless nature, he uttered the following words:
“Your Honor, I want to take this opportunity to state my intent to appeal my convictions. If there are any lawyers listening, and willing to take on my appeal, take a moment to please reach out to me. It’s not that I do not have feelings. It’s that I was warned not to show them due to the scrutiny of this case. Thank you.”
During the hearing, prosecutor Andrea Raymond really summed it up perfectly, when she described Chandler as a "child of privilege who had loving parents, a supportive family, no housing insecurity or discrimination in his life."
She went on to say, “It was out of this childhood, which was nearly ideal, that these crimes were committed,"
The prosecutor went on to explain that not only has there never been a moment where Chandler has mourned his parents' death but that he also reportedly responded to someone who confided that they were sad after attending their memorial service by suggesting they cheer up by watching a movie — Halloween.
Now, in a sense, justice has been served. However, that will never fill the hole left behind in the hearts of the loved ones who will continue to mourn the loss of Bart and Krista.
They won't be there on their son Mitchell's wedding day, they will never meet any future grandchildren they may have had, and Jane will never receive another daily call from her best friend Krista, as she had grown accustomed to every day of her life since middle school.
This case just feels really senseless, because Chandler had grown up in a positive environment, within a loving home that so many people would go to bed dreaming about. His parents were happily married, doting, warm people who, in his eyes, made the mistake of wanting him to go to school and lead a fulfilling life.
Well, there you have it. It is undeniable that there is just so much tragedy here, and I feel like after delving into this case, we all really need to go and hug a puppy just to shake off this heavy feeling.
Like, subscribe, and hug a puppy - that can be our new mantra. Until next time, take care of yourselves.

Wedding Speech
Friends and family,
On behalf of my beautiful wife, Emily and I - or should I say on behalf of my wife and I (wow, that sounds good to say at last) - we would like to thank everyone for coming today. Everyone has travelled in some way to be here and share this special day with us and we’re delighted to see you all.
We have loved ones who have come from near and far to be here with us, from interstate to international - as far as Singapore, Switzerland and Chile. It’s quite humbling to have such an incredible group of friends and family that care so much and are willing to take a long-haul flight to see you say ‘I do’. Just to be clear, if anyone catches them napping, it’s the jet lag, not my speech.
Thank you to everyone for your cards, kind thoughts and of course your presence here today. They’re all greatly appreciated, and please know that taking the time out of your lives to be a part of our story is the best gift we could ever ask for.
We feel so fortunate to be surrounded by so much love today. Emily and I are over the moon to see all of your faces, and we want to extend a huge thank you for coming together and sharing these unforgettable moments with us. We appreciate each and every one of you.
Now, a special thank you to all of the people who've helped to make today possible. Our wedding party - Emily's daughters and sister, and of course, my two best men. Your support means the world to us. To the lovely Singapore ladies, especially Rachel and Mia who helped make the proposal in Singapore possible and a night to remember.
The contractors have gone above and beyond, in particular our DJ, who happens to be Emily's brother, Jack. One thing is for sure - the dance floor will be in good hands tonight.
From our venue, the beautiful Maleny Manor which has been perfect to host our special day on the beautiful Sunshine Coast Hinterland, to our band who have provided the perfect soundtrack, and our celebrant who made our ceremony so special - just know that we wouldn’t change a single thing.
To my incredible mum - our bond is something I’m so thankful for, and your love and support are everything. You've made me the man I am today, and seeing I managed to convince the most beautiful woman in the world to say 'yes' to marrying me, then I'd say you've done one hell of a job!
To Emily's parents and their partners, thank you for welcoming me into your family, and for your acceptance of our blended family. And a special thank you to Emily’s mum for arranging the wedding planner. Definitely helped us (or more accurately, Emily) in planning our special day.
Today is such a happy occasion, but we do need to acknowledge that not everyone is here that we’d love to share it with. My dad, who passed away in 2012, is greatly missed. Although he never got the chance to meet Emily, Mason, Chloe, or Ben, I know he would have loved you all as much as I do. It would mean a lot to me if you would all stand for a toast in his memory – To John Anderson…
Now to the star of the show, my beautiful bride, Emily. Watching you walk down the aisle today truly took my breath away, in ways that I could never be prepared for. Today and all days, you are the picture of elegance, magnificence, and beauty. I have so many reasons to be thankful to you Emily and it's really hard to know where to start.
Firstly, I want to thank you for being my best friend. You’re incredibly supportive, generous, kind, loving and thoughtful. You have dedicated so much of your time to ensure this day is perfect, all while balancing our crazy blended family - and for that I will be eternally grateful.
Beyond our vows today, I wanted to make another promise to you - that I will dedicate all of my time and energy to giving you the best life I possibly can offer, and provide you with a lifetime of happiness, adventure, laughter, and love that you so deserve.
Thank you endlessly - not only for putting up with me - but for everything you’ve done to make today, and every day, so special. I’m so proud to be able to call you my wife and am excited to be your husband.
I can genuinely say there is no one else on the planet I’d want to have thrilling conversations with like “Is it one bin or two tonight?” or “I don’t know, what do you want to eat?” on repeat for the rest of my life.
And with that, I would like everyone to be upstanding to raise your glasses for my final and most important toast of the evening. To Emily, the most beautiful bride and the love of my life - Here’s to growing old together. To Emily…
As we prepare to start this new chapter of our lives together, I am filled with such gratitude and joy. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us as a married couple.
Thank you all again for being here tonight. Let’s raise a glass to love, laughter, and happily ever after!
Cheers!
Wedding Vows
Emma,
Throughout my life, I’ve heard that the person you meant to fall in love with will appear when you least expect it. And, sure enough, at a time in my life when I was down and out, at my lowest point, there you were.
Going back to when we first met, it didn’t take long for me to realise that I loved every second of the time we spent together. I could be around you 24/7 and still want more. I found myself smiling from the time I woke up to the time I fell asleep, and I soon knew that you were the one for me.
Although there isn’t one single defining moment that I can point to and say “That’s when I fell in love”, I believe it was a series of little things that showed me exactly who you are - thoughtful, selfless, loving, loyal, and kind.
A testament to this is how you bought a gift for Charlie before you even met him, and how you would iron an elderly lady’s clothes every week out of the goodness of your heart - even when you were recovering from surgery, juggling covid restrictions and doing homeschooling. One of my favourite things about you is the way that you always make time for other people.
You have brought a balance to my life, inspiring me to be the best version of myself with your light and positivity. Now, here I stand today, completely in awe of the life that we’ve built together, and the love, happiness and laughter that fill every day - all because of you.
That’s not to say it’s been all sunshine and rainbows, navigating the ups and downs of a blended family. But there’s no denying that we really shine as a team, and I’ve come to rely on your unwavering support that gives me the strength I need to get through anything life throws my way.
Every day with you is a blessing. Please never change a single thing about yourself because you couldn’t be any more perfect. You have no idea how much the little moments mean - right down to waking up with coffee in bed, coming home with cheesecake and beer and your random “I love you” messages.
We have already shared so many incredible adventures and I can’t wait to continue making priceless memories and growing old together as we make each other laugh. So, here’s to our future, and an exciting new chapter in our love story.
I would now like to make some promises to you.
With all my heart, I vow these things to you now and forever:
- I promise that I will always make time for us
- I promise to encourage, support, and believe in you, in the same way you have continually done for me
- I promise that I will stand by not only you, but Lucy, Chloe, and Ben, as a pillar of strength, love and guidance
You are far more than a partner; you’re my confidant, lover, supporter, and of course, my best friend. Now, let’s get this show on the road so I can also call you, my wife.
I love you.

Ingo Swann and the Secret Alien Bases on the Moon
Have you ever gazed up at the night sky, wondering whether there’s anything else out there? An unexplored world, or an undiscovered civilisation perhaps? Well, what if I told you that the moon, in all of its celestial glory, is hiding one of the greatest secrets ever kept from humanity?
Today, we’ll be exploring whether there are alien bases hidden in plain sight. As fun as it sounds, please be warned; this story is sure to stretch the boundaries of your reality and challenge everything you thought you knew about the universe. Not exactly light viewing, huh?
We’re talking CIA, aliens, and something called the Stargate Project - just to name a few. So, if you’re equipped to deal with that, then let’s dive into the tale of Ingo Swann. Granted, he’s not exactly a household name. In fact, chances are, you’ve never heard of him - but believe me, his story is extraordinary and you’re not going to want to miss a moment of this one…
Who was Ingo Swann?
Ingo Douglas Swann, born on September 14, 1933, was so much more than it says on his bio; American psychic, artist, and writer. Beyond that, he was a one-of-a-kind visionary, a pioneer whose abilities transcended the known limits of the human mind.
One of his most astonishing claims, taken from his 1998 book, Penetration, was that he channelled his psychic abilities, at the behest of the CIA, to explore the far side of the moon. What he saw there, according to his accounts, was nothing short of astonishing – extraterrestrial activities and constructions that challenge our understanding of life beyond Earth.
Yes, it’s a bold and controversial tale, and I can reveal that it was initially mocked and dismissed as the ramblings of an imaginative mind. That was until 2006 when a compelling new layer of authenticity emerged. The CIA released documents on the Stargate Project that clearly showed Swann's participation - giving us reason to pause and consider the veracity of his other claims.
Although a somewhat unconventional man, Swann was far from the clichéd image of a clown in a tinfoil hat spouting outlandish claims one might picture. Rather, he was a highly regarded, well-respected, established professional whose work was taken seriously by reputable organisations and researchers.
His involvement in government-funded projects like the CIA and the validation of a number of his observations by subsequent scientific discoveries lend substantial weight to his other thrilling assertions - but more on those later.
The early life of a psychic pioneer
Ingo Swann's journey into the unknown began much like any other - with curiosity and a series of unexplainable events that marked his early life. As a child, his family noticed peculiar incidents – objects moving without explanation, Swann's uncanny ability to know things he shouldn't, and his frequent vivid dreams that often turned out to be prophetic.
Swann's path to recognition wasn't straightforward. In his early years, he made it his mission to understand and control his abilities, often participating in experiments testing extrasensory perception (ESP).
But how did Ingo Swann, a man renowned for his psychic abilities end up peering into the darkest corners of the moon of all places? How did his journey lead him from influencing plants with his mind to uncovering potentially world-changing secrets hidden on a celestial body millions of miles away?
A journey into the unknown
At this point, you may be wondering what was it about this man that made him a key figure in one of the most secretive government projects of our time. Well, it was his successes in the early ESP tests and his willingness to explore his talent that drew the attention of scientists and researchers.
The field of psychic research was gradually being taken more seriously. This, coupled with Swann’s eagerness to push boundaries of what was already known about the human brain set him on a path to involvement in more complex and secretive projects, eventually intersecting with government interests.
The Stanford experiments
The real turning point in Swann's life came with his involvement in a series of experiments at the Stanford Research Institute. Researchers were exploring the potential of the human mind in ways that had never been done before, and thanks to his demonstrated psychic abilities, Swann became a prime subject for these experiments.
It was here at SRI that he would refine the practice of remote viewing; the ability to see, describe, and experience places and events far removed from his physical location - and his success at Stanford didn’t go unnoticed.
The lightbulb moment
During the 1970s, Swann participated in a notable experiment where he was required to sit in a chair and use his mind to perceive the contents of sealed boxes, each containing different symbols. In a particularly memorable instance, when asked to describe what he saw inside one such box, Swann reported seeing only darkness.
The researcher, initially thinking the attempt had failed, suggested moving on to a different test. However, Swann clarified that the darkness was due to a burnt-out light bulb inside the box. This claim left the researcher perplexed. Upon opening the box, it was indeed found that the light bulb inside had burnt out.
Project Stargate
Swann’s ability to accurately describe distant locations and hidden objects brought him to the attention of the United States government. He became involved in Project Stargate which we touched on earlier. This was a covert operation exploring the use of psychic abilities for intelligence gathering, and it became one of the most controversial and intriguing chapters in the history of psychic research.
In this environment of high stakes and oh-so-much secrecy, Swann's abilities were put to the ultimate test. He was asked to use his remote viewing skills to gather intelligence, a task that would lead him to explore places beyond the boundaries of our planet. His participation in Project Stargate not only marked a pivotal moment in his life but in the history of psychic research.
Gaining credibility
During his time at Stanford, Swann was asked to project his consciousness and use his remote viewing abilities to observe Jupiter. This was a task he approached with hesitation, mindful of his reputation and the scientific validity of his work.
To sum it up, he wasn’t too keen on making any claims that couldn’t be confirmed. He was cognisant of the fact that he didn’t want to be “just another psychic” making unfounded claims.
However, he was reassured that Jupiter had been chosen because NASA had probes on the way there right now. So Swann agreed, and he went on to make many key observations. He described a hydrogen mantle, cyclonic storms, high infrared emissions, and the specific colours of the planet's clouds, including the presence of ice crystals in its atmosphere - which were all startlingly accurate.
Most strikingly, he claimed to have seen a ring around Jupiter, akin to Saturn's but distinctly smaller and closer to the planet, composed of dust and tiny asteroids. This may not seem like a big deal now, but back in 1973, this was particularly remarkable because, at the time of Swann's remote viewing, such a ring around Jupiter had never been observed by astronomers.
It was only six years later, with the Voyager 1 spacecraft's journey in 1979, that Swann's observation was confirmed, adding a significant feather to the cap of his credibility.
What Ingo Swann saw
As we teased earlier, one of the more intriguing aspects of Ingo Swann’s book, Penetration, is the way that it details some truly incredible encounters - and these encounters were not limited to his remote viewing sessions. He recounted physical observations of beings he strongly believed were not of this world. I bet you’ve been wondering all about them, so without further ado, let’s dive in…
The mysterious Mr Axelrod
The first of many weird and wonderful recollections from Swann's book revolves around a mysterious figure known only as Mr Axelrod. This is when Swann’s psychic journey really took an extraordinary turn.
It began with an unexpected phone call at three in the morning, instructing him to visit the Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C. His instructions were specific: to stand near the elephant statue in the central rotunda at noon. Following these directions, Swann found himself approached by a man with a military demeanour, who escorted him to a car, where he sat beside another man of similar appearance. Swann later referred to these men as the “twins” in his book.
After complying with their requests such as not speaking and allowing them to search him for listening devices, he agreed to accompany them on a flight. After feeling like the car was doing endless circles, he was eventually led to a helicopter, still blindfolded, and flown to an undisclosed location. When his blindfold was finally removed, he was introduced to this Mr. Axelrod character for a secretive project; one that was paying $1,000 per day - which, thanks to inflation, is around $5,000 in today’s equivalent.
The only catches? Well, firstly, he wasn’t allowed to talk to anyone about it for at least ten years. Secondly, he wasn’t allowed to leave the facility for the next few days; which wasn’t really so bad when you consider the comfortable room, TV, gym, swimming pool, and endless supply of anything he could have wanted. The final condition was that he had to be under constant surveillance. Sure it’s not ideal, but for that payday, I think we could all make it work, right?
So, of course, Swann agreed, and work commenced the next day. He was presented with a series of lunar coordinates, and although he was curious about why he was examining the moon, he remembered the no questions asked policy.
Swann began his unique journey, scanning the locations one after another. Some areas revealed nothing out of the ordinary, and he observed the moon's familiar landscape - vast cliffs, sprawling craters, and sweeping dunes of white powder, all to be expected.
However, it wasn't long before Swann stumbled upon something both intriguing and baffling. He noticed peculiar tracks across the lunar surface, resembling those left behind by tractors or similar machinery. Strangely, he also observed patterns that one would typically attribute to wind erosion, despite the moon's lack of an atmosphere.
As he explored further, he entered a crater clouded by a mysterious green haze, bathed in a diffused light that again seemed impossible without an atmospheric medium to scatter it. He then saw what appeared to be an airfield, complete with gigantic structures that resembled hangars, intricate road networks, and sophisticated machinery.
The landscape was marked by bridges spanning craters and chasms, suggesting intense industrial activity. The moon's rocky surface bore perfectly round holes, indicative of excavation by heavy machinery. Moving along, Swann observed many lights of various hues, being emitted by large dome-like structures.
As Swann drew closer, he noticed that these domes had windows, and despite the surrounding darkness, a fine mist and that familiar eerie green glow were visible inside. Approaching the windows, he described beings engaged in vigorous activities, that bore a striking resemblance to humans.
One by one, the beings stopped what they were doing and turned towards the window where Swann's consciousness was focused. Feeling their gaze, he grew increasingly uneasy. He nervously uttered, "They see me." Axelrod responded with a calm yet urgent tone, "Come back. Come back now."
Swann, increasingly anxious, observed, "They're pointing at me." Axelrod, with a firm directive, advised, "Please come back quickly, away from that place." Heeding the instruction, Swann concentrated and retracted his consciousness, gradually reopening his eyes to the familiar surroundings.
After regaining his bearings, he turned to Axelrod and inquired, "You already know they're psychic, don't you?" After a moment of reflection, Axelrod exhaled deeply and concluded, "The experiment is over. It's time for you to go home."
Strange encounters in aisle 5
In the chronicles of Ingo Swann's experiences, believe it or not, one of the standout moments occurred in a setting as mundane as his local supermarket. While doing his weekly shop, Swann came across a woman whose beauty was not just striking, but almost otherworldly. In an instant, he felt the hairs on his neck stand on end.
She was dressed in what could only be described as minimal attire, capturing the attention of everyone around. Swann initially tried to brush it off as attraction or infatuation, but deep down he knew that this was no ordinary encounter. The moment he laid eyes on her, he felt an overwhelming wave of sensations and electricity that could only have been triggered by his psychic abilities.
Then who should show up, but the CIA “twins” from his lunar experiment? This caused him to flee the store in a panic, and that evening he received an unexpected directive to travel to New York and await further instructions at Grand Central Station.
Upon arriving, Swann spotted one of the “twins” near a pay phone. As he approached, the phone rang - it was Mr. Axelrod on the line, inquiring about Swan's interaction with the mysterious woman. Axelrod's tone was one of suspicion and urgency, pressing Swann for details about her. Confused and increasingly alarmed, Swann insisted that he had no prior knowledge of this woman.
Axelrod's response was stern and emotionless. He warned Swann to steer clear of her, labelling her as highly dangerous but wouldn’t elaborate further. The conversation then shifted to Swan's progress in remote viewing. Upon learning that Swann was nearing a 65% accuracy rate, Axelrod instructed him to leave a note with the number '65' on his desk once he achieved this milestone and to tell no one about it. The call then ended abruptly.
You can’t park there
Ingo Swann didn’t hear a word from Axelrod for a year until he finally achieved his remote viewing success rate of 65%. Following instructions, he wrote this figure on a piece of paper and left it on his desk before leaving for the day. Despite the security of his office’s access code, he discovered the next morning that the note had vanished. In its place on his desk was a thin layer of powder, within which were inscribed the words 'Expect contact.'
Just a few days after receiving the cryptic message, Swann was on his way to the university cafeteria when he encountered Mr. Axelrod. In a direct approach, Axelrod extended a handshake and inquired if Swann could spare a few days for a trip. Swann agreed, curious about the destination. With a knowing smile, Axelrod posed an intriguing question: "Have you ever seen a UFO?" The moment was charged with anticipation.
The destination remained undisclosed, but the private jet was soon northward which led Swann to surmise they were headed towards Alaska. They landed in the dead of night, in a remote and dark location. Swann, along with Axelrod and the “twins”, climbed into an unmarked van.
Swann was handed a thermal jumpsuit and asked to remove all metal objects. They journeyed for two hours along windy mountain roads, eventually stopping amidst a stand of pine trees. Axelrod emphasised the need for silence and stealth as they embarked on a substantial hike to their undisclosed destination.
Swann relied on the “twins” to help him navigate the dark terrain, as they were wearing night vision goggles. Reaching the lake's edge, Axelrod instructed Swann to observe in complete silence and stillness, hinting at the acute sensitivity “they” have to noise, movement, and heat.
In the hushed darkness, they waited until a subtle signal from one of the “twins” indicated the onset of something extraordinary. Initially, Swann saw only the mist rising from the lake, but it soon transformed into a luminous blue light before shifting to a deep, ominous purple.
The mist thickened, and from it emerged a triangular craft, approximately 90 feet wide, emitting a rhythmic hum. Beams of light shot out from the craft, scanning the area. A sudden movement from the “twins” signalled a need to relocate quickly. A beam struck near their previous position with a loud crack, resembling thunder, leaving Swann stunned and immobile.
During the journey back to the airport, Swann went on to theorise that this UFO was part of a resupply mission for extraterrestrial operations, possibly linked to mining on the moon - and that it was extracting water resources from Earth.
Axelrod, ever enigmatic, neither confirmed nor denied Swann's theory, simply acknowledging it. After a handshake and a thank you, Swann was directed towards a plane for his solitary journey home, marking the end of his adventures with Axelrod and the “twins”, and closing a remarkable chapter in his life.
Believe it or not
Unsurprisingly, Swann's claims about his lunar observations and strange encounters were met with a mix of scepticism and intrigue. While some dismissed these vivid descriptions as the product of an overactive imagination, others pointed to Swann's proven track record in remote viewing as a reason to at least consider the possibility of their truth. After all, this wasn’t just anybody making these claims; this was a man with one hell of a reputation at stake. And let’s not forget his assertions that he had already been proven to be true.
The implications of Swann's moon observations are profound. If in fact, validated, they suggest not only the existence of extraterrestrial life but also the possibility that these beings are far more advanced than us, capable of constructing bases on celestial bodies.
All in all, it raises so many questions about the extent of our knowledge of the universe and the potential for interactions between humans and aliens - not to mention the potential for technology that is far more advanced than we’ve ever known.
Are we alone?
No matter where you stand on this topic, Ingo Swann’s book, Penetration, serves as a catalyst for discussions about the possibilities of remote viewing, the existence of extraterrestrial life, and, perhaps most fascinatingly of all, the extent of government involvement in exploring these frontiers.
If his descriptions of lunar bases and alien activities are to be believed, then it not only means that we are far from alone in the universe, but also that alien civilisations may be far more advanced than ours. Such revelations challenge the fundamental beliefs about human uniqueness and superiority in the cosmic order. They also raise questions about the true nature of the moon, long considered a barren and inactive celestial body.
The far side of the moon
Since Swann's era, lunar exploration has advanced significantly. Various space agencies have launched missions to orbit, land on, and study the moon. These missions have provided a wealth of data about the moon's composition, geology, and potential for human habitation. However, despite these advancements, the far side of the moon, which Swann claimed to have remotely viewed, remains largely unexplored and mysterious.
Outro
Ingo Swann kept his word; he didn’t tell a soul for ten years and went on to release his book, Penetration, in 1996. He passed away, aged 79, in 2013.
It’s important to point out also if you have any doubts about this, that you can visit the official CIA website for yourself and see Ingo Swann’s name listed on hundreds of documents surrounding Project Stargate and related projects.
Now, of course, we can’t say for sure that just because he was there, he saw those things. However, you would assume that government officials wouldn’t keep hiring him and paying him significant amounts of money if he wasn’t achieving results, right?
Anyway, I’ll leave you with those thoughts, and be sure to leave your two cents below. While you’re here, please be sure to like, subscribe, and share. It means the world to us and allows us to keep telling these fascinating stories.
